Volunteering with AWC offers exciting opportunities to assist our team in the field across a broad range of activities, including scientific surveys (setting up and clearing traps, survey work and walking transects), land management (weeding, fence maintenance and clearing tracks), general sanctuary maintenance (painting and repairs), camp hosting and the caretaking of our sanctuaries. There are also various volunteer opportunities within events, fundraising, data entry, communications and administration.

Conservation volunteers are at the heart of Bush Heritage’s mission. Whether on the ground at one of our reserves or supporting our team remotely, volunteers contribute their skills and passion to vital conservation efforts.

On-Reserve, volunteers help with a wide range of activities including land management tasks such as:

We also offer opportunities for volunteers to contribute from home and from our offices, helping with tasks such as: 

  • research,

  • administration, and

  • data analysis.

Parks and Wildlife Service volunteers are involved in on-ground projects that contribute to conservation, science, recreation and tourism. Some of these projects can give you access to work in areas not usually available to the public, like working in restricted areas or with rare fauna and flora.

Docents provide the ‘unexpected’ – including informal talks about animals, tours on foot and by vehicle, directions and general visitor information. Docents become especially skilled at “edu-tainment” (the combination of education and entertainment to inspire and engage visitors) to promote the Zoo’s conservation mission.  Docents are people who love animals but primarily they are people who love people.

Tangaroa Blue Foundation (an Australian registered charity) works to prevent and remove marine debris in Australia and across regions. We use the Australian Marine Debris Initiative framework to inspire behaviour change, innovation and empower communities, industry and government to make data-driven decisions that improve ocean health. There are lots of ways to get involved and help tackle marine debris around the country. Volunteer at a one-off clean-up, become a citizen scientist by assisting with quarterly monitoring or venture with us on a remote multi-day clean-up mission.

As an AQWA Curatorial Volunteer, you will gain invaluable experience in the aquarium and aquaculture industry, and practical skills in animal husbandry, working with exclusively Western Australian native marine life.

Despite AQWA’s colossal volume of water – over 4 million litres in circulation – it is cared for by a small, specialised and committed group of aquarists & curators. Our volunteers are an essential and esteemed part of that team!

Placements are limited and highly sought, but if you you have applicable skills in diving, aquaculture, marine or vet studies, aquarium curation, or commercial aquarium maintenance, please apply now.
